The Agency’s objective is to promote the use of environmentally safe isotope techniques for development purposes. The sustainability and safety of dams and reservoirs have been identified, through feedback from governments, as an area where the application of isotope hydrology can have a major impact on socio-economic development. This impact is in terms of both cost-savings and safety.
Isotope hydrology deals with various methodologies based on the general concept of "tracing" in which naturally occurring isotopic elements or intentionally introduced isotopes (stable or radioactive ) are employed. In nature, water in different environments develops isotopic fingerprints which can be collected to provide key information for identifying the origin and pathway of water in the hydrological cycle; investigating sedimentation in the reservoir and investigating leakages.
